Max Harris discusses the importance of the virgin birth, paralleling the importance of the bodily resurrection of Jesus.  In Matthew’s account, we see that Jesus’s conception breaks the sequence of “begetting”–his birth is entirely an act of the Holy Spirit.  Just as Jesus’s resurrection forecasts that of his followers, so also his birth in the Spirit shows us the impossibility of our rebirth in the Spirit except through the direct work of the Holy Spirit.
