Psalm 62:1

Sisters and brothers in Christ,

I’m sending this earlier today so that you might each have it available for your own Good Friday meditations.

“For God alone my soul in silence waits; from him comes my salvation” (Psalm 62:1)

Facing the cross this Good Friday morning, we are reduced almost to silence. The only words that come readily to mind may be those of the tax collector, “standing far off” and praying, “God, be merciful to me a sinner” (Lk 18:13).

And yet, as we lift our eyes to gaze on the cross, we see that the death of Christ is itself the answer to our sinner’s prayer. The God who is love extends unbounded mercy to us. He died for us. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1).

So, on this Good Friday morning, our prayer can move quietly from timid plea to faith: “God, you have been merciful to me, a sinner.” May we all, by God’s grace, find abundant mercy in Christ’s cross on this Good Friday.
